online education

Distance learning is a phrase that describes everything from traditional correspondence courses to videotapes and courses broadcast over cable. Students say the big advantage to online schooling is the "anytime, anywhere" convenience that allows them to fit classes into busy schedules. Parents can enter the virtual classroom after the kids are in bed at night or before they wake up in the morning. And with a laptop and modem, business travelers don't need to skip a class. (See the article, I Got My Degree Through E-Mail)

Teachers and students connect to the internet to post and receive assignments, share feedback and discuss topics. Typically a teacher might post a class assignment on a Sunday evening, along with a reading list and a "lecture" for students to respond to. As the week progresses, various students log on to the system, download the material and add responses to the teacher's comments and those of other students. Although online students get more than additional responsibility; they also get more access to teachers and classmates than traditional students have, as well as a more democratic "classroom." Students can respond to questions and discussions as fully as they want, not pressured by the time constraints they'd face at a traditional college. Some virtual schools even boast a more diverse student body and smaller classes than regular schools. We strongly encourage all visitors and students of all ages to explore lifelong learning through online education.
