PEOPLE'S JUSTICE 2000 UPDATE & ACTION ALERT: Actions on School Safety & Criminalization of Youth (as of 5/13/2000) 

UPDATE: Recognizing that young people, particularly youth of color, bear much of the brunt of daily attacks at the hands of the NYPD and the broad prison industrial complex – with increased funding for prisons happening at the same time that school/education budgets for young people are cut, People's Justice 2000 is focusing energy on countering these trends. Member groups of People's Justice 2000 have continued work to plan actions on school safety and criminalization of youth in NYC. Planning has been led and coordinated by the Youth Task Force of People's Justice 2000. Letters have been sent to all members of the Board of Education to request a meeting regarding concerns. To date, the letter has not been responded to.

Demands include:

1) NYPD Out of Schools

2) Close Spofford

3) Increase funding for alternatives to incarceration to counter spending on detention/ jails

UPCOMING ACTIONS & MEETINGS:

1) Thursday May 18th, 6pm, @ United Charities Building (105 E. 22nd St., Manhattan): Mass Meeting for the Campaign.

2) Week of May 22: Posters will go up citywide, with outreach to high schools and youth centers. Groups attending the 5/18 meeting should identify what schools they can cover around the city.

3) Saturday June 3, 1pm, Broadway (between Prince & Houston in Manhattan): Demos in front of Eddie Bauer and Victoria's Secret, protesting their use of prison labor.

4) Week of June 5: Individual meetings with City Council members; daily presence outside City Hall to push the council on these issues. Call Youth Force to get involved: 718-665-4268.

5) June 12 – June 19th: Press outreach

6) June 20th @ Horizon Detention Center, St. Ann's (between 149th St. & Westchester Ave, take the 2/5 to 149th & 3rd Ave.): Press conference over use of detention of youth.

7) June 21, 5pm @ Board of Ed headquarters, 110 Livingston St., Brooklyn: Bum Rush the School Board Meeting Demo at Board of Education =========
