THE WPA'S RECORD
WPA's contribution to the management of the state, representation of the people, and the
revival of civil society
The WPA has been in the frontline of the democratic struggle since the 1970s and
its leadership has remained intact. In spite of its small numbers in the National Assembly
and the Regional Democratic Councils, the WPA has played a prominent role in the
management of the State and in the representation of people since the 1992 elections.
WPA's first Member of Parliament was Mr. Eusi Kwayana, who even in the highly rigged
Assembly of 1985 was able to offer significant representation to the unrepresented.
Following the 1992 elections the WPA was represented in the National Assembly by Dr. Clive
Thomas, then by Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, and Mr. Matheson Williams. The Party has made
vigorous representations in the following: Annual budget debates; Omai disaster; Medical
Termination of Pregnancy; Domestic Violence; Trade Union Recognition; Environmental
Protection, to name but a few. It has given leadership in the following Parliamentary
committees:
Public Accounts;
Integrity legislation.
Trade Union Recognition Bill.
The Amerindian Act.
Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.
The WPA also serves on the Foreign Affairs Standing Committee, and the Border Standing
Committee. WPA is making a decisive contribution to the work of the All-Party Select
Committee on Constitutional Reform, having identified reform of the 1980 Constitution as a
political priority to be achieved before the 1997 elections.
WPA secured seats in the Regional Democratic Councils of Regions 4,7,8,9, and 10 in the
1992 elections. WPA councillors on these RDCs include Desmond Trotman (Region 4), Leton
Wong (Region 7), Albertino Peters (Region 8), Bernard Simon (Region 9), and Stanley
Humphrey (Region 10). Each of these Councillors serves on several committees ranging from
Youth, Health, and Education (Region 4), to Lands Selection and Works (Region 7), to
Finance, Works, Local Government, Health and Housing (Region 10). WPA Councillor Albertino
Peters is Chairman of the Region 8 RDC.
